Bob Wheeler
I remember several interesting things about Bob Wheeler. Bob was from Oklahoma
and was a rodeo fan and participant. Not sure what his events were but knowing Bob
like we knew him I would think bull riding or bucking horses. Speaking of bull, Bob could
share plenty of that. I don't know if his wife had Indian blood but she was a cute lady
with dark skin and dark hair.
An Aggie tradition which Bob did not comply with  was wearing a hat inside the
Memorial Student Building. Bob refused to remove his cowboy hat when he was inside
and he was adamant about this. The other tradition which Bob clashed with was the
one which required a Fish Aggie to "whip out" to anyone as the Fish  walked across
campus. The sequence might occur something like this: "Sir, my name is Fish Smith",
and then he would extend his hand and shake hands with the person he met. On
several occasions Bob was met by a fish while walking across the MSC parking lot.
Bob, really was not thrilled with this Aggie tradition, then met with the next Fish with a
"Bob-Like" reaction. When the Fish whipped out and took Bob's hand, Bob shook his
hand and with his Okie strength held on to the Fish's hand and refused to let go. The
Fish, "Sir, let me go, please!!" but Bob continued to hold and soon the Fish was near
tears so Bob let him go. I don't know if Bob ever encountered another Fish whipping
out, but I suspect that particular one never whipped out to Bob again.
Bob was a regular poker player in our Friday night games and displayed a knack for
playing cards. After one of our Friday nights I found that I had something missing. Under
our kitchen sink I kept my collection of Green Stamps and now they were missing. I am
pretty sure I know who took them.
One of the things we participated in was Intramural sports and specifically football
where Bob was a player. Since we were playing against students who were younger
than us, Bob was older than all we played against and he was also rougher, after all he
was a rodeo participant used to being rough. The other team's players accused Bob of
playing dirty.
One of the classes we had was Grady Parker's education class and after one
semester with Grady we were not impressed with his style (oh yea, it was Dr. Grady
Parker). The 2nd semester his class turned out to be one of the most informative of the
entire year because we were able to choose how we wanted the class to be run. Dr.
Parker allowed us to have a different professor each class meeting. Our class met at
night and to give you an example; one night we had a professor who was an expert in
"Pecans", another night a prof who was an expert in "Cotton". Every class was a new
subject from some expert on campus and it  was usually very good. In the meantime we
were studying on our own "Programed Education" which I think (cannot remember for
sure) we had a book or a pamphlet to study. This was what I our final exam was to be
about. When the day of our final came and we received our exam, there was one
question...."Discuss Programed Education". Remember it has been 53 years so that
may have not been the exact question, but it was similar. Here is where Bob enters the
story. We were given 2 hours to respond to the one question and we all began writing,
trying to expound on everything we knew about Programed Education. I'll be honest I
wrote so much i was getting writer's cramps. We had no sooner started writing when
Bob Wheeler got  up and turned in his paper. I watched him turning it in and thought to
myself, "Bob must not  know much about Programing". When grades were posted we
learned that Dr. Parker had failed Bob. I never knew anything else about Bob's grade.
In viewing the list of Silver Taps, Bob Wheeler's name is listed. This is the
