MR. C. M. LOYD
Mr. Loyd had no Dr. in front of his name, but he was one of the best teachers. He could get down to
a common sense level. Mr. Loyd was one of the directors of AYI and taught Physics. Each week we met
at the MSU to eat and then convene for a meeting in a classroom where Mr. Loyd and Dr. Potter would
bring us update on AYI issues. (this is where Rog and I smoked our cigars)
In 1986 I went on a weeks field trip with Dr. Schroeder  and Mr. Loyd. The trip was given for former AYI
participants and apparently it was going to be the last summer field trip and Dr. Schroeder wanted to use
up all of the monies that were in the account. Both Dr. Schroeder and Mr. Loyd were accompanied by
their wives. Our trip was aboard a Grey Hound bus and each day we would rotate whe
re we set. I started
out front and was able to communicate with the two profs and their wives during the trip, but as the week
progressed my sitting was farther and farther away from the
front. Finally on the last day I realized why I
didn't want to be in the back of the bus. The toilet, being untended for the entire week, offered an aroma
that was not  appealing. Each participate was given a certain amount of monies to spend while on the
trip, which included frequent stops at MacDonald's and various curio shops along the way.
Credit for the course was for Field Geology 601 with Dr. Schroeder  listed as prof. After having Dr.
Schroeder 20 years earlier I learned how to deal with his style. When he lectured it was a 100 miles and
hour and there was no such thing as taking notes, or at least for me. My solution.....a mini tape recorder.
I would record his talks about a particular site and then that night I would write the report. My goal was to
get an A by covering 10 of our stops and submitting a paper at the end of the trip. The following are the
sites I wrote about: Cap Rock Escarpment, Sangre DeCristo, The Great Sand Dunes, The Silverton Train
Ride, Mesa Verde National Park, Petrified Forest National Park, Sunset Crater, Grand Canyon, White
Sands, Caverns of Sonora. My favorite stop was of course The Grand Canyon. We spend two days there
and I walked about half way down and then back up. It was an awesome experience, as was the entire trip
Special Note:  I spent the night at the Ramada Inn .the night before the field trip was to begin and I
knew Don Jensen was still living in College Station, so I called him. He could not meet with me because he
had a planned family outing and that was the last time I ever had contact with Don.
Note: I have no
picture of Dr.
Schroeder
