Elders and Deacons

Far Date, July 12, 1907

My Granddad told me another story about the time he helped get a
church organized in Arkansas.  He had spent several days, teaching
them about biblical qualifications for Elders, Deacons and Bishops.
The congregation had learned how to nominate and elect qualified
men. They had elected Brother Brown and Brother Smith as Elders
of the congregation. Brother Roberts and Brother Dixon were
elected and appointed to the office of Elder. The men were getting
quite good at this now. They had learned to nominate, second and
then vote. "Before I leave here there, is one more thing that we
need." (Granddad had looked up and down the aisles and saw
splotches of tobacco juice gracing the floor, making an unsightly
mess)" We need cuspidors". Without hesitation, Brother Jones
spoke up, "I move that we apint brother Lucas as Cuspidor!"
Before Granddad could explain, the nomination carried unanimously!
