Stefano Accomazzi

Stefano was an AYI participant from Italy. He was married and left
his family in Italy. Of all the participants, he was probably the one
with the most brains. He also was very gregarious and down to
earth. Since he did not bring his family with him, he often hung
out with the single guys, mainly Roger Banwart, Richard Magarian,
and myself, Don Henderson. We often met at the Ramada Inn for
coffee in the evenings. Sometimes we met in the Memorial
Student building. Stefano came to our apartment to visit at times.
It was Richard who tried to encourage Stefano to use deodorant
and I can still see Richard describing to Stefano as he pointed to
his own under arms and held his nose and said, "Stefano,
Shooo!!" I guess it wasn't manly in Italy to wear an underarm
deodorant. I can not remember if he ever caught on, but he
always took it with a smile. When we had coffee, Stefano, would
begin putting not one package, or two of sugar, but he poured in
as much as he could find, because he said that he could not get
much sugar in Italy, so he was going take all he could. If we had a
physics problem that needed solving, we went to Stefano and he
always knew how to work ti. We all became good friends and after
I left A&M, I communicated with Stefano for a few years, but later
lost contact. I last had a letter from him in the late 60's and have
often wondered what became of him. I do know that the had
another child shortly after going back to Italy, so that would mean
the child is about 50+ years old. I believe Stefano was nearing 40
when he was at A&M, so the chances of him being still alive are
slim.
Roger sent me several photos from our days a A&M. He reminded me that Stefano (pictured here with me
in front of the apartment where Rog, Richard and I lived.) was visiting with us to wash his clothes. The
wash room was next door to our apartment and all of Stefano's gear had not arrived, so we were washing
his clothes for him. Probably in August or September of '66.
